Die Lippenblüten sind blauviolett, 20-25 mm lang und besitzen eine gekrümmte Röhre und sitzen in einer kopfigen Ähre oder Quirl oben an der Pflanze. Die Laubblätter sind länglich-eiförmig und locker behaart. Das oberste Blattpaar sitzt etwa 1-5 cm unter dem Blütenstand.
Dieses ist ein gutes Unterscheidungsmerkmal zu der Gemeine Braunelle, Prunella vulgaris, die eine gerade Blütenröhe hat und deren Laubblätter direkt unter dem Blütenstand sitzen.
Man findet die Grossblütige Braunelle auf Halbtrockenrasen, Heiden und Trockenwaldsäumen. Sie ist kalkliebend und nicht sehr häufig.
Ähnliche Arten: Gemeine Braunelle, Prunella vulgaris
Weisse Braunelle, Prunella lociniata, die gelblich-weiße Blüten besitzt, der Blütenstand bei ihr ist verzweigt und die Laubblätter oft fiederspaltig.
