Das Blausternchen heißt auch Meerzwiebel oder Sternhyazinthe und ist ein Zwiebelgewächs.Die 6 Kronblätter sind am Grund miteinander verwachsen. Kelchblätter fehlen. Der oft etwas rötlich gefärbte Stängel trägt 2 bis 8 Blüten in einer Traube und aus der Zwiebel wachsen zwei längliche Laubblätter.
Scilla kommt auf feuchten Wiesen und Wäldern vor. Meist ist diese Pflanze verwildert, da sie eine beliebte Gartenpflanze ist.
Weitere Scilla-Arten: Herbst-Blaustern, Scilla autumnalis, mit 30 blütiger Traube, die gelegentlich in Weinbergen vorkommt.
Der schöne Blaustern, Scilla amoena, hat eine wenig blütige Traube, und mehrere etwas breitere Laubblätter. Sie ist wild nicht bekannt.
