Er stammt ursprünglich aus dem südeuropäischen Gebirge. Früher pflanzte man diese schöne Pflanze als Zierpflanze in Burg- und Schloßanlagen. Daraus ist er dann verwildert.
Er wächst auf nitratreichen und kalkarmen Böden.
